Stop and Search Scrutiny in Haringey

Stop and Search Data Monitoring

At Haringey Independent Stop and Search Monitoring Group, as part of our monitoring activity, we scrutinise stop and search data published on the Metropolitan Police website at: Met Police UK

For example, in Haringey, between August 2024 and July 2025, 62% of all stops and searches were for drugs – compared with a London Borough average of 57% and 54% for Hackney, a comparison borough. Based on these statistics, our feedback to the police might be that too many police resources in Haringey are spent stopping and searching people for small amounts of cannabis for personal use when a greater priority for the community is getting weapons off the streets.

Other statistics we regularly monitor are the ‘NFA' rates and  ‘Positive Outcome' rates to determine the overall effectiveness of stop and search in the borough.  In Haringey, around 66% of all stops lead to No Further Action (NFA), which is around the average for London.

To help assess fairness, we monitor the rates at which people of different ethnicities are stopped and searched.  In Haringey, Black people are overall 3.5 times more likely to be stopped and searched than White people, and around 5 times more likely to be stopped on suspicion of carrying weapons.  Although both these statistics are close to the average for London, these rates of ‘disproportionality' nevertheless suggest that there is systemic racial stereotyping and bias in the Met Police as a whole.

What We Check

We systematically review quarterly stop and search statistics. This helps us spot important trends and highlight whether police practices are fair and justified:

  • Examining whether the number of stops is increasing or decreasing, and understanding the reasons.
  • Reviewing positive outcome and no further action rates to gauge police effectiveness.
  • Analysing ethnic disproportionality to reveal any evidence of discrimination, ensuring everyone in Haringey is treated fairly.
  • Checking the numbers of stops and searches of children and NFA rates and comparing these with other boroughs – to help ensure that the searching of children is proportionate, with safeguarding needs considered.

We feed back our key findings, highlight concerns, and make recommendations at quarterly meetings with the Stop and Search Lead at North Area Police.
